When you are sick, you go to a doctor that you have confidence in to make you better. When your car breaks down, you head to a trusted mechanic that has fixed the vehicle in the past. When you are struggling with an addiction, you also need a proven treatment program that will help you overcome your disease and embrace a life of long-term sobriety. That is where an evidence-based treatment program, such as the one offered at The Last Resort, comes into play.
What is Evidence-Based Treatment?
Evidence-based treatment is treatment that has been proven effective through studies and other data. Research has led to an emerging “re-thinking” of treatment delivery for men struggling with substance addiction. Known as Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care, this approach questions some of the traditional treatment models that have been used for many years and identifies newer, less costly and often more effective treatment options.
The Last Resort’s team of clinical professionals has studied the Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care approach to treatment and has developed these principles into its own program design. Our recovery model incorporates a number of “best practices” from the Recovery-Oriented Systems, including the components listed below:
Each man applying to The Last Resort is carefully assessed to ensure he will benefit from the treatment services we provide. Our free initial screening helps both the potential client and his family feel confident with their choice of needed services. It also maintains a community at The Last Resort that is committed to the recovery process.
Many men come to us suffering from a variety of co-occurring disorders, such as depression or an anxiety disorder. The psychological symptoms of the mental illness may be secondary to the chemical addiction, which means that when the addiction is properly addressed, other symptoms may improve as well. Our onsite clinicians are highly qualified to identify issues associated with addiction and treat those disorders through therapy and medication. Providing a man with the right level of care when it is needed is another strength of the new recovery model utilized at The Last Resort.
Perhaps the quality that best describes life at The Last Resort is our deep sense of community, generated from the camaraderie that develops quickly among our men. Men that enter our program are not treated as patients, but as brothers and welcome guests. Each man is responsible not only for himself, but for the wellbeing of the community as a whole.
60 or 90-Day Program
Recovery happens over time and at a pace that is different for every man. A number of well-documented studies indicate 90 days is generally the amount of time required for a man to receive maximum benefit from a treatment program. However, while most of our men do complete their program in 60 or 90 days, others find extending their residential stay by a few weeks or months offers even more benefits. The majority of our men also move into transitional living or sober houses after treatment to ease their transition back into their daily lives.
At The Last Resort, we believe a man’s treatment should always be individualized. No two men learn in the same way, so we avoid the “cookie cutter” approach to addiction treatment. Instead, we offer thorough assessments prior to entry in our program that allow us to create the appropriate treatment plan for each individual. We also provide ongoing evaluations to identify developmental issues that could hinder his treatment process.
Because one size does not fit all in addiction treatment, we offer a variety of treatment modalities to meet men where they are at. Some of these modalities include:
- Motivational Interviewing
- Recovery Yoga and Meditation
- Personally-Assisted Weight Training
- Equine Therapy
- Holotropic Breathwork
- Nature Walks and Therapeutic Outings
Years of chemical abuse take a serious toll on the body. At The Last Resort, we believe proper nutrition can play a key role in aiding a man’s recovery from addiction. Through carefully planned, nutritious menus, we help men appreciate the hidden role nutrition can play in controlling their mood swings and aiding them in the recovery process.
The Last Resort encourages men to remain in some sort of continuing care for an additional year following their residential stay. Through transitional living facilities, sober houses and screened recovery coaches, our men receive the support they need when they leave our care. Continued care can help avoid relapse as men maneuver through the first several months of early recovery.
Evidence-based care often makes the difference between a man that successfully navigate the recovery process and one that experiences relapse after leaving treatment. To learn more about our evidence-based treatment programs, contact The Last Resort at 512-750-6750.
